Derating of Squirrel-Cage Induction Motor Due to Rotating Harmonics in Power Voltage Supply

This paper presents a method for determining the load capacity of three-phase squirrel-cage induction motors supplied with balanced distorted voltage containing rotating harmonics (1st, 5th, 7th, 11th, 13th,...). The is based on dependence motor power losses in rotor cage. was determined short-circuit measurements made frequencies equal to harmonic frequencies. To evaluate capacity, factor proposed name Harmonic Losses Factor (HLF) introduced. Its expression generalization well-known HVF expression. However, it has been shown that more accurate estimation obtained using sum cage from higher harmonics. Measurements and calculations were carried out low-voltage rated 22 kW synchronous speed 1500 rpm. Calculations showed derating curves given IEC 60034-17 NEMA MG1 standards are incorrect tested motor.
